Mairipora is a municipality in the State of Sao Paulo - Brazil, located in the metropolitan region of Sao Paulo. The estimated population in 2009 was 79,155 inhabitants and the area is 321.5 km², resulting in a population density of 233.4 HAB/km².

The History

In its evolution, the area of Mairipora initially Juqueri, if you configured the way other cores of settlement around the village of Sao Paulo, serving as protection and support to routes connecting with the sertao interior. The village arose in the late 16th century or mid-17th century, around the chapel of Nossa Senhora do Desterro, erected by Antonio de Souza Del Mundo. Around the Chapel, and acting as support elementary rural activities service, unique in the area, originally arose a core with interesting stroke and adaptability to little favour its deployment. Entered initially in the area of administrative domain, Sao Paulo and subsequently the Guarulhos.

In 1696 the village was raised to the category of Vila de Nossa Senhora do Desterro of tupi Word Juqueri, designating a plant legumes, also known as opium. In 1783 became parish; the chapel was transformed into Church and underwent several modifications (1841, 1940s and 1982). The last reform misread the ancient temple, saving only the tower.

The village of Juqueri broke into the 18th century as a source of agricultural products to Sao Paulo, coming to produce cotton and wine for export. Not prospered as other locales inserted in the regions of lavras gold and precious stones, characterised as muleteers landing that were supplying Dowling, Paul.

In 1769, the camara paulistana determined the opening of a road between Juqueri and Sao Paulo. The "Path of Juqueri" became later on the old road of Braganca. Before capital district (1874-1880) and Nossa Senhora da Conceicao de Guarulhos (1881 the 1888), Juqueri became municipality through Provincial Law No 67 of 27 March 1889. One year before the emancipation, the Sao Paulo Railway (railroad Santos-Jundiai) built Juqueri station. In 1898, the State Government opened the Juqueri colony hospital for the mentally ill, directed by the physician Franco da Rocha.

The Association name Juqueri hospital, causing confusion in the delivery of correspondence and discomfort among juquerienses, created a movement to change the name of the municipality. In 1948 the Mayor Bento de Oliveira has requested authorization to the Legislative Assembly for change. On occasion, Mr Ulisses Guimaraes supported the request and spoke the famous words: "Juqueri, land of madmen. Crazy for citizenship".

On the 24th of December of that year was adopted the law on 233, allowing you to change the name of the municipality. The name Mairipora, among others from Tupi-Guarani, was suggested by journalist and poet Araújo Jorge, meaning precisely City (Mairi) beautiful (Pora). Thus, the city is known as picturesque village.

In the 1950s, Mairipora is marked by the coming Film company, Multi Movies directed by filmmaker Mario Civelli. Today there are still the barracks of the company, where the first film was shot in colored Brazil.

With the deployment of the highway Fernao Dias, connection of Sao Paulo to Minas Gerais, there was a rediscovery and recovery of Mairipora, on grounds of natural attributes of the region to house high standard secondary residences (leisure/recreation) and subsequently fixed housing. The real estate boom occurred from the end of the 1970s and 1980s. This movement argued the law for protection of Springs (State laws in 898/75 and 1,172/76), conservation of water resources for responsible supply much of the metropolitan population. In 1992, the region of Serra da Cantareira was recognized as a world heritage site by UNESCO.
